Some time ago, certain major railroad companies started to designate one or two
cars at the end of their trains as “women-only” during morning and evening rush hours. This system was aimed at protecting female passengers from molesters taking advantage of the crowds during these times. Despite the anticipated criticism against it as reverse discrimination, the female-only car system enjoys general public support because the molester issue was so serious that it affected even male passengers who were innocent but suspected of being molesters. Koinobori are carp streamers used to celebrate the Children’s Day, formerly known
as Boys’ Day, on May 5. Since carp are said to be strong enough to swim against the
powerful flow of rivers, parents put up carp streamers in the hope that their children will grow up to be as strong as carp. Nowadays in big cities, smaller streamers are more popular than before because space is getting scarcer due to the limited housing conditions. (76 words)

(1) While many Japanese and French regard traveling as a pastime, many South Koreans see it as something indispensable for their lives.
(2) The Japanese word for “Japan” is pronounced in two ways; namely “Nippon,” and
“Nihon,” both of which are correct. Come to think of it, however, many from abroad might find it strange that no single official name for the nation has been mandated and that the Japanese government recognizes both readings as okay.
